What a PPSR check is, and what it does not cover

A PPSR certificate is the document that protects a buyer from repossession. What it proves, what it leaves out, and why the search number matters.

What it is

The Personal Property Securities Register records security interests over property, including vehicles. A PPSR search against a vehicle's serial number returns whether anybody has registered a claim over it, and issues a certificate with a search number recording that you asked and what you were told.

That certificate is not a formality. The legal protection a buyer gets is tied to having searched by serial number, so the certificate is the evidence that you did.

What the certificate covers

The core answer is whether a security interest (money owing against the vehicle) is registered. The search also returns information the register holds about the vehicle alongside it, which is why a PPSR search underpins most vehicle history reports rather than sitting beside them.

What it does not cover

This is where buyers get caught. A PPSR certificate is not a roadworthiness check, not an inspection, and not an opinion about the car.

  • It says nothing about mechanical condition. A car with no finance owing can still need a gearbox.
  • It does not value the vehicle or tell you whether the price is fair.
  • It cannot tell you about damage that was never claimed on insurance.
  • It is a snapshot. A search on Monday says nothing about Friday, which is why the search should be close to the purchase.

Search against the right vehicle

A certificate is only as useful as the identifier it was run against. Searching the VIN from an advertisement protects the advertisement.

Read the VIN off the vehicle, check it against the papers, then search it. If those three do not agree, the disagreement is the finding.

Common questions

How long is a PPSR certificate valid?
It reflects the register at the moment of the search. There is no expiry as such, but the closer it is to the day you pay, the more it is worth.
Does a PPSR check tell me if a car is roadworthy?
No. It answers whether money is owing and what the register holds about the vehicle. Condition is an inspection question.
