REVS check vs PPSR: what replaced REVS in Australia?

State REVS registers were retired in 2012 and unified under the national PPSR. Here is how to check vehicle finance debt today by rego plate or VIN.

What happened to the REVS check?

If you bought a used car in Australia before 2012, you probably did a REVS check (Register of Encumbered Vehicles). Each state, including NSW, Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia, ran its own separate register to record whether money was owed on a vehicle.

On 30 January 2012, the Australian Government permanently replaced all state-based REVS registers with a single national system: the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR), administered by the Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA).

Today, any service offering a 'REVS check' is legally providing a search of the national PPSR register. The physical state REVS databases no longer exist.

Why a single national register was needed

Under the old state REVS system, debt records stopped at state borders. A vehicle with an active loan registered in NSW could be driven across the border and registered in Victoria without the lender's interest appearing on Victoria's REVS.

Dishonest sellers exploited this interstate loophole, leaving innocent buyers with repossessed vehicles. The PPSR closed this loophole by creating one unified national database that tracks vehicle security interests across all Australian states and territories.

Can you do a PPSR check with just a registration plate?

The official government PPSR portal (ppsr.gov.au) strictly requires a 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or chassis number to perform a search. It cannot search using a license plate.

However, services like MyCarCheck bridge this gap by connecting directly to official Australian vehicle registries. When you enter an Australian state and registration plate, the system matches the registered VIN and immediately issues the official AFSA PPSR certificate.

What a modern PPSR report includes compared to REVS

A modern PPSR search report provides substantially more protection than the original state REVS checks ever did:

  • Official AFSA PPSR search certificate with an official search number and timestamp.
  • Registered security interests, including the secured party (lender name) and registration identifier.
  • Written-off vehicle status (WOVR check covering collision, flood, hail, or fire damage).
  • Stolen vehicle verification against national police databases.
  • Registration status, expiry date, state, and plate verification.

Common questions

Does REVS still exist in NSW, Victoria, or Queensland?
No. All state-based REVS registers were permanently decommissioned in January 2012. All vehicle debt and security interests in Australia are now recorded on the national Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR).
Is a PPSR check the same as a REVS check?
Yes, in purpose. The PPSR is the modern, official Australian Government replacement for the old state REVS system, covering all states and territories under one unified national database.
Can I search PPSR using only the number plate?
The government portal strictly requires a VIN, but MyCarCheck allows you to search using any Australian registration plate. We resolve the VIN via official national registries and deliver the official PPSR certificate.
