The checks

Can you do a PPSR check without the VIN?

The government's PPSR search needs the VIN. You can start from the rego instead. How that works, and whether it gives you the same protection.

Why the government's search asks for the VIN

A PPSR search is a search by serial number. For a car that means its VIN or chassis number, and the government's search at ppsr.gov.au will not start without one.

Starting from the plate

A registration plate is not a serial number, but the registries know which vehicle each plate belongs to. A search that starts from the plate looks the vehicle up, finds its VIN, and runs the PPSR search on that VIN.

Before you pay, a check by rego shows you which vehicle the plate belongs to and part of its VIN, so you can confirm it is the car in front of you.

Is the protection the same?

The legal protection comes from a search by serial number, and from what the register said at that moment. A check that starts from the rego ends in exactly that: a search on the VIN, with a certificate that records it.

What matters is that the VIN on the certificate is the VIN on the car. Check it against the compliance plate before you pay.

Read the VIN off the car anyway

Plates move between cars, and a plate can be swapped. Read the VIN off the car itself on the day you buy and compare it with the certificate. If they differ, stop.

Common questions

Can I do a PPSR search with just the rego?
Yes, by starting from the rego: the vehicle is looked up, its VIN found, and the PPSR search run on that VIN. The government's own search needs the VIN itself.
Is a PPSR check that starts from the rego legally valid?
The certificate records an official PPSR search on the vehicle's VIN, the search the legal protection depends on. Make sure the VIN on it matches the car.
What if the VIN on the car does not match the certificate?
Stop. Either the plate is on a different car or the car is not what it claims to be. Do not pay until you know which.
